When the evenings get dark again and you dig out your warm jumpers, it's time to make your home cosy. Bouquets featuring the most beautiful autumn blooms are perfect for this. Autumn bouquets feature flowers in beautiful autumnal hues such as orange-red, tan, deep purple and golden yellow, complemented by charming sprigs of berries and other colourful fruits. Want to know which autumn bloomers you shouldn't be without this season? Read on to find out!
Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums are the quintessential autumn flower. With their enormous variety of colours, shapes and sizes, they are incredibly versatile, giving our florists endless possibilities. Our favourite for autumn is the classic golden-yellow variety, which perfectly complements the season's mood. The chrysanthemum also symbolises joy and optimism, making it a wonderful choice for congratulating someone.
Dahlias
Dahlias are the divas of autumn flowers. Blooming from August until late autumn, they are often found in summer bouquets. With their large, striking flowers in a wide range of colours, they certainly turn heads. They look stunning in a vase and, even better, dahlias come in so many varieties that you can easily create a bouquet using only dahlias!
Sunflowers
Sunflowers bring instant cheer to your home. They also bloom in the summer, but are also readily available fresh in the autumn. Forget the giants you know from the fields — there are also smaller, more delicate varieties, which our florists love using in their bouquets. Their warm yellow hues complement autumn colours perfectly, making them one of our favourite autumn flowers.
Mid-asters
These little stars may be small, but they certainly make an impression. Mid-asters are incredibly versatile and look beautiful when combined with larger flowers. This typical autumn bloomer adds a light, playful touch to your bouquet. We love combining different colours of asters (purple, pink and white) to create a vibrant bouquet. An added bonus is that they're incredibly durable and will stay beautiful for a long time, even if the recipient doesn't have a green thumb.
Callicarpa
Okay, we'll admit it: callicarpa isn't technically a flower. But its beautiful purple berries are so special that it deserves a place on this list. Just a few sprigs instantly give your autumn bouquet that wow factor. They're readily available in September, October and November, so we're more than happy to incorporate them into our bouquets!
Crocosmia
With their fiery red, orange or yellow flowers, crocosmias bring the ultimate autumnal palette to your bouquet. It's not just the colour that makes you feel good instantly, though; with their bell-shaped flowers and slender, sword-shaped leaves, they're sure to delight everyone.
Did you know? Crocosmia is also known as montbretia. This plant is native to South Africa but also thrives in the Netherlands.
Sedum
Sedum, also known as stonecrop, has sturdy flowers that are perfect for adding structure to your bouquet. These usually come in shades of pink or red, with a flat shape that contrasts beautifully with rounder flowers.
Sedum is also very beautiful when dried and used as an autumn decoration. Allow some of your sedum to dry in a vase to create a stunning autumnal arrangement that will last for months.
Alstroemeria
Alstroemerias, also known as Inca lilies, are the tardigrades of the cut flower world. They last a long time and come in beautiful autumnal colours. If you want a bouquet that stays beautiful for weeks, these are the flowers for you! Another great thing about this flower is that each stem produces multiple flowers that open in succession. This means the bouquet is constantly renewing itself!
Hypericum
Another non-flower that can really make a difference to autumn bouquets. The berries add that little something extra to your arrangement. They are available in various colours, ranging from green and yellow to deep red. This means you can use them in all sorts of ways, whether you want to create an autumnal atmosphere or a fresh and airy touch!
Gladioli
Gladioli are beautiful for autumn field bouquets and instantly add height and a touch of playfulness to any arrangement! With their long, straight stems and colourful flowers that open from the bottom up, they create a stunning vertical accent. They create a stunning contrast in any vase, especially when combined with round flowers.
Liatris
Also known as the 'beautiful candle', liatris adds a unique texture to any bouquet with its purple, plume-shaped flowers. The flowers open from top to bottom along the stem, creating a spectacular visual effect. Like sedum, liatris also dries beautifully. Allow a few stems from your bouquet to dry to create a lasting autumnal accent in your home.
Celosia
With their plume-shaped, cockscomb-like blooms in warm shades of red, orange and yellow, celosias instantly bring warmth and cosiness to autumn arrangements. Bear in mind that celosias need a fair amount of water, so make sure you regularly top up or change the water in bouquets containing them.
Amaranthus
The red-tinted, drooping flowers of amaranthus add a dramatic, somewhat bohemian touch to your bouquet. They're perfect for adding movement and a loose structure to tighter arrangements and also look great in field bouquets. Our florists love to let amaranthus hang elegantly down from one side of the bouquet to create an asymmetrical, modern look.
Statice
Also known as sea lavender, statice is ideal for those who want to enjoy their bouquet for a long time. These flowers dry beautifully, retaining their colour and transforming your autumn bouquet into a lasting arrangement. Dried statice is therefore perfect for making beautiful wreaths and other autumn decorations!
Anthurium
To add an unexpected twist to autumn bouquets, we sometimes include anthuriums. Their glossy, heart-shaped flowers in red, pink or white add a touch of tropical luxury to autumn arrangements, instantly transforming a bouquet into something special. Thanks to their rich appearance, anthuriums are also beautiful additions to more minimalist autumn bouquets. Combined with a few sprigs of greenery, they instantly steal the show!
