Bouquets are carefully packaged for a reason. This protects the bouquet from damage during transport and from the effects of cold or heat. Place the bouquet in water as soon as possible.
To remove bacteria and ensure the flowers stay fresh for longer, it is important to cut the stems diagonally before placing them in the vase. Use a sharp knife or a good pair of pruning shears for this. If the tools are blunt, you will pinch the capillaries and the flowers will not be able to absorb the water properly. Ensure that no leaves come into contact with the water, as this will cause them to rot. Flowers cannot tolerate polluted water. It is not strictly necessary to remove thorns from roses. This can create 'wounds' where bacteria can nest. Have any flowers finished blooming? Remove them to enjoy the remaining flowers for longer.
Use a vase with ample space for the flower stems and make sure it is clean. Glass vases are generally easy to clean, either in a dishwasher or with dish soap. This also enables you to check whether the bouquet still has enough water. Avoid crystal or metal vases, as these can contaminate the water more quickly. Tip: Store vases upside down in the cupboard to keep them clean.

Using cut flower food helps flowers to develop beautifully and last longer. Therefore, it is important to add the specified amount of food to the water. Make sure you add enough water, as too much food in too little water can cause leaf burn and stem discolouration. However, underdosing is much more common, causing stem discolouration, stunted flower development, limp petals, leaf discolouration and limp leaves. Special food is available for certain flower varieties. Feel free to ask us about this.
Flowers don't need spring water, tap water is fine. The ideal temperature varies depending on the type of flower. Therefore, lukewarm water is generally recommended. If you have a bouquet of a specific type of flower, get in touch to find out the ideal water temperature. Ask us!
If you add cut flower food, it is usually unnecessary to change the vase water between uses. However, some flowers can be very contaminating. In that case, it's advisable to change the water after a few days. Don't forget to add fresh cut flower food!
Flowers can age faster and/or droop if they are exposed to drafts, heat, or fruit. Therefore, avoid placing the bouquet in direct sunlight, near a radiator or fireplace, or in a draughty spot.
