Before you dismiss the idea, bear in mind that it's more common than you think! Cats, in particular, are curious creatures who love to play with moving leaves or nibble on them out of boredom. Young dogs and puppies also enjoy exploring the world with their mouths and may accidentally nibble a plant or bouquet.
Pets sometimes deliberately seek out greenery to calm their stomachs or get rid of a hairball. While this is natural behaviour, you still want them to stick to safe plants!
These flowers are poisonous to dogs and cats
Unfortunately, quite a few popular flowers are best kept away from your pet. We've listed the most important ones below:
Lilies: deadly for cats
Lilies deserve extra attention because this beautiful flower is extremely dangerous for cats. Even a tiny amount of pollen on their fur while being bathed can lead to serious kidney problems or even death. The water in the vase is also poisonous. Do you have cats at home? If so, avoid lilies completely or, if you receive a bouquet of lilies, remove the stamens (the orange rods). Even better, put the bouquet somewhere your cat can't reach.
Bulb flowers
Unfortunately, many of the spring flowers we love are poisonous to pets. Consider the following:

- Daffodils: the outer scales of the bulb are the most dangerous
- Hyacinths: can cause stomach and intestinal cramps
- Amaryllis: the entire plant is harmful
- Crocuses (especially autumn crocuses): highly poisonous and, in the worst case, fatal

- Chrysanthemums: popular in autumn, but the entire plant is poisonous
- Hydrangeas: can cause vomiting and abdominal pain
- Lilies of the valley: the entire plant is poisonous
- Azaleas and rhododendrons: can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness

Practical tips for flower lovers with pets
Choose your flowers wisely

Be mindful of placement
Even safe flowers are best placed somewhere your pet can't reach easily. Think of a high dresser or a wall shelf. This will prevent your beautiful bouquet from being knocked over or touched by curious paws.

Give your cat its own 'green corner' with cat grass. This will significantly reduce the temptation to nibble on your other plants.
Recognise the symptoms
If your pet has eaten something unsafe, it's important to recognise the symptoms:
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- drooling more than normal
- weakness or lethargy
- breathing problems
- dilated pupils
Unsure? Call your vet immediately! If you suspect poisoning, time is of the essence. Therefore, always contact your vet immediately. Try to determine which plant your pet ate, and if possible, bring a sample to the clinic.
