This year, 8 March falls on a Sunday again. This UN-recognised holiday has been celebrated in the Netherlands since 1912. Initially, it was a tribute to the large-scale strike held in New York on 8 March by women in the garment industry. However, since the women's movement of the 1960s and its official recognition by the UN in 1978, International Women's Day has evolved into a celebration for all those who advocate for women's rights.
